Stadtpfarrturm - Pfarrkirche St. Egid

Carinthia's second-highest church tower soars almost 92 metres above the old town, its baroque onion dome crowning the parish church of St. Egid. A spiral climb of 225 steps rewards you with a 360-degree panorama from the Woerthersee to the Karawanken.

Sobre este lugar

Rising over the rooftops of Klagenfurt, the Stadtpfarrturm is the slender landmark that anchors the city's skyline and marks the start of our walk. The parish church of St. Egid beneath it was first documented in 1255 and granted parish rights in 1303, but fire and earthquake have repeatedly reshaped what stands here today. After the church was consecrated anew in 1697, the tower was completed in 1709, and following yet another fire in 1723 it received the graceful baroque onion dome you see now. Inside, the church glows with ceiling frescoes painted around 1760 by the Carinthian master Josef Ferdinand Fromiller, while a modern apocalyptic side chapel decorated by the visionary artist Ernst Fuchs offers a startling contrast. The real magic, though, lies in the ascent. Climbing 225 steps of a tight spiral staircase brings you to a viewing gallery some 45 metres up, home to the last full-time professional tower keeper in Austria and a small museum of the watchmen who once scanned the horizon for fire and danger.
