Schloss Emslieb

Schloss Emslieb is a small private Renaissance manor standing right along the historic Hellbrunner Allee, the finest of the noble houses that line the avenue. Built in 1618 for a nephew of Hellbrunn's founder Markus Sittikus, it was designed as a miniature echo of an Italian villa on Lake Como. You admire its elegant facade for free from the public avenue, but it remains private property, so the view is enjoyed from the outside only.

Sobre este lugar

Standing at the north-eastern top of the tree-lined Hellbrunner Allee, Schloss Emslieb is the crowning jewel of the avenue's famous "promenade of palaces." It was built in 1618, just a year after Hellbrunn palace itself, for Jakob Hannibal von Hohenems, a nephew of the pleasure-loving Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus who created the Hellbrunn gardens nearby. Designed in the Italian manner, the little palace was modelled as a miniature echo of the Palazzo Gallio in Gravedona on Lake Como, a deliberate nod to the family's north-Italian roots. After Markus Sittikus died, Jakob Hannibal was expelled from Salzburg in 1620, and the manor passed through many hands over the centuries, including Princess Ernestine von Esterhazy around 1797 to 1811. Today it is the private home of Thaddaeus Ropac, one of the world's most renowned contemporary-art gallerists, giving the art-lover's villa a fitting modern owner. Because it is private property, you admire its facade entirely for free from the public Hellbrunner Allee without entering the grounds. It makes the elegant turning point of the walk, where the promenade of palaces gives way to the open landscape park beyond.
