Markthalle

A light-flooded Art Nouveau market hall where oriental spices, French cheeses and fresh flowers fill a soaring pillar-free space beneath a vaulted glass roof.

Sobre este lugar

Standing between Dorotheenstrasse and the Old Palace, Stuttgart's Markthalle is one of Germany's most beautiful covered markets and a protected historic monument. Opened in 1914 to designs by the young architect Martin Elsaesser, it replaced the city's old flower and vegetable halls with a strikingly modern structure hidden behind a gentle Art Nouveau facade of arcades, oriels and small turrets. Inside, a single vast hall opens up without a single supporting column, its glass roof carried by an ingenious frame of reinforced concrete girders that flooded the sellers' stalls with daylight. More than a century later it still hums as a place for connoisseurs, its galleries stacked with Mediterranean delicacies, regional produce, fine wines and small restaurants where shoppers pause over a coffee or a glass of Swabian wine.
