Alcazaba de Málaga

One of the best-preserved Moorish palace-fortresses in Spain, a double-walled citadel of gardens, courtyards and horseshoe arches climbing the hillside above the city, with glorious views over the sea.

Sobre este lugar

The Alcazaba is the crowning glory of Moorish Málaga and one of the best-preserved fortresses of its kind in all of Spain. Built mainly in the eleventh century, and extended under later Muslim rulers, it served as both a military stronghold and a palatial residence for the governors of the city. A citadel of concentric walls climbs the hillside, and the winding approach, designed to slow and trap attackers, leads up through a series of fortified gateways, some incorporating Roman columns from the theatre below. Within, the atmosphere changes entirely, opening into serene Nasrid-style palace courtyards with horseshoe arches, trickling fountains, pools and fragrant gardens, offering a glimpse of the refined life of Moorish Andalusia. From its ramparts and the higher castle of Gibralfaro, to which it is linked by a walled corridor, the views over the rooftops, the cathedral, the port and the shimmering Mediterranean are simply breathtaking.
