Sa Llotja

A perfect gem of civil Gothic architecture near the seafront, a fifteenth-century merchants' exchange with slender spiralling columns, recalling the age when Mallorca was a great Mediterranean trading power.

Sobre este lugar

Sa Llotja, the old merchants' exchange, is one of the finest and most beautiful examples of civil Gothic architecture in the Mediterranean, standing near the seafront in the district to which it gives its name. It was built between 1420 and 1452 by the great Mallorcan architect and sculptor Guillem Sagrera, at the height of the island's prosperity, to serve as the exchange and meeting place of the Col·legi de la Mercaderia, the guild of merchants, in the days when Palma was a wealthy and important trading port linking the Christian and Islamic worlds. From the outside it looks almost like a castle, with battlements and octagonal corner towers, but it is adorned with delicate carving, including a beautiful angel over the main doorway. Step inside and the magic is revealed: a single great hall where slender columns rise and twist like palm trees, branching into elegant vaults, a serene and luminous space that is now used for exhibitions.
