Huerto de Calixto y Melibea

A romantic walled garden perched on the old city ramparts, named after the tragic lovers of a famous medieval Spanish classic, with lovely views over the river and up to the cathedral.

Sobre este lugar

The Huerto de Calixto y Melibea is a tranquil and romantic garden laid out on the southern ramparts of the old city, beside the Casa Lis and overlooking the river Tormes. It is named after the ill-fated lovers Calixto and Melibea, the central characters of La Celestina, one of the masterpieces of early Spanish literature, a tragic tale of love, lust and death published around 1499 and traditionally associated with Salamanca. According to the romantic tradition, it was in a garden such as this that the lovers met and that their tragedy unfolded. The garden is a peaceful retreat of shaded paths, roses, a small fountain and a pergola, built into the old stone walls, and it offers lovely views out over the river, the Roman bridge and up to the towering cathedral, making it a gentle, literary pause near the end of our walk.
