Sobre este lugar
The Plaza Mayor of Salamanca, completed in 1755, is considered by many to be the most beautiful main square in all of Spain. It is a perfectly harmonious, enclosed rectangle in the ornate Baroque style known as Churrigueresque, built entirely of the local golden Villamayor sandstone, which glows a warm amber in the sunlight. Four storeys of balconied buildings, their ground floors opening into a continuous arcade of graceful arches, wrap around the square, broken only by the grander facades of the City Hall on one side and the Pavilion Real opposite. Running around the arcades, carved medallions bear the portraits of famous Spaniards, from kings and explorers to writers and, controversially, more recent figures. Originally used for markets and even bullfights, the square is today the beating social heart of Salamanca, its cafes and terraces always full, and a place the whole city passes through.
