Universidad de Salamanca

The oldest university in Spain and one of the oldest in the world, famous for its dazzlingly intricate Plateresque facade, on which visitors hunt for a tiny carved frog said to bring luck.

Sobre este lugar

Founded in 1218, the University of Salamanca is the oldest university in Spain and one of the oldest in the world, a place of such renown in the Middle Ages and Renaissance that it ranked among the great universities of Europe, alongside Bologna, Paris and Oxford. Its scholars debated the great questions of the age, from the theology of the New World to the movements of the heavens. The university's most celebrated feature is the facade of its Escuelas Mayores, the main schools building, a breathtaking wall of golden sandstone carved in the intricate Plateresque style, as fine and dense as embroidery, crowded with medallions, heraldry and figures, including a portrait of the Catholic Monarchs. Hidden somewhere in all that carving is a tiny frog perched on a skull, and tradition holds that students who can spot it unaided will pass their exams and enjoy good luck. Inside, you can visit historic lecture halls, including that of the great scholar Fray Luis de León.
