Praza do Obradoiro
The grand main square of Santiago and the emotional end point of the Camino, where exhausted, joyful pilgrims arrive to gaze up at the cathedral's soaring Baroque facade.
Sobre este lugar
The Praza do Obradoiro is the heart of Santiago and one of the great urban squares of Europe, a broad expanse of stone enclosed by monumental buildings from four different eras. Its name, meaning the workshop, recalls the stonemasons' yards that worked here on the cathedral. On its eastern side rises the breathtaking Baroque facade of the cathedral; opposite stands the elegant neoclassical Pazo de Raxoi; to the north, the ornate Hostal dos Reis Católicos; and to the south, a college of the ancient university. But the square's true meaning is human: this is journey's end. After walking for days, weeks or even months along the Camino, pilgrims finally stagger into this square, often weeping with emotion and relief, to lie or sit on the stones and gaze up at the cathedral. There is no more moving place in Spain to simply sit and watch.
