La Seo

Zaragoza's original cathedral, built over the Roman forum and the main mosque, blending Romanesque, Gothic, Mudéjar and Baroque, with a dazzling wall of patterned brick and tile in the Mudéjar style.

Sobre este lugar

La Seo, officially the Cathedral of the Saviour, is Zaragoza's original and oldest cathedral, sharing the city's cathedral honours with the nearby Basílica del Pilar. It stands on a site sacred for two thousand years, built over the forum of Roman Caesaraugusta and then the main mosque of Moorish Saraqusta. Begun in the twelfth century and extended over the following six hundred years, it is a fascinating mix of styles, from Romanesque apse to Gothic nave, Renaissance and Baroque chapels, all crowned by a Baroque tower. Its most celebrated feature is the Parroquieta, an exterior wall of breathtaking Mudéjar decoration, a geometric tapestry of patterned brick and glazed green and white tiles, recognised by UNESCO as part of the Mudéjar architecture of Aragón. Inside, a superb museum displays a renowned collection of Flemish and French tapestries.
