Plaza de España

The busy modern crossroads of Zaragoza, where the old town meets the grand nineteenth-century shopping avenue, framed by elegant buildings and a monument to the heroic sieges of the city.

Sobre este lugar

The Plaza de España is the vibrant civic crossroads of modern Zaragoza, the point where the medieval old town meets the elegant, tree-lined shopping boulevard of the Paseo de la Independencia. It is ringed by handsome buildings, including banks and the arcaded facades of the nineteenth-century avenue, and it buzzes with buses, shoppers and life. At its centre stands a monument to the Sieges of Zaragoza, commemorating one of the most heroic and terrible episodes in the city's history, when its people resisted two brutal sieges by Napoleon's army in 1808 and 1809. The square and the grand avenue leading from it represent the confident, bourgeois city of the nineteenth century, a fitting contrast to the Roman and medieval marvels nearby, and the natural place from which to explore the modern commercial heart of Zaragoza.
