Chambre de Commerce Belfry

Rising seventy six metres over the Place du Theatre, this neo Flemish belfry crowns Lille's former Chamber of Commerce. Completed in 1921, its carillon of bells rings out over the old town every day.

Sobre este lugar

The Chamber of Commerce belfry was built between 1910 and 1921 to the design of the celebrated local architect Louis Marie Cordonnier, who drew deliberately on the Flemish Renaissance style of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to root the new building in the region's identity. In the old Low Countries a belfry was never only decoration; it was the proud civic tower of a free merchant city, a symbol of commercial power and independence that rivalled the church spire. Cordonnier's tower carries a carillon of twenty five bells that chimes the melody of the P'tit Quinquin, a beloved Lille lullaby, every day at noon. Classified as a historic monument in 2016, the belfry still rises as the exclamation mark of the old town skyline, visible from across the surrounding squares.
