Place des Terreaux

A grand square in the heart of the Presqu'ile, framed by the City Hall and the fine arts museum and dominated by Bartholdi's monumental fountain of four rearing horses.

Sobre este lugar

The Place des Terreaux is one of the great gathering places of Lyon, a broad rectangle at the foot of the Croix-Rousse hill, bordered by the long Baroque facade of the Hotel de Ville and by the Musee des Beaux-Arts in the former Palais Saint-Pierre. Its name comes from the French word for earth, recalling the marshy ground and filled in moat that once lay here, and for centuries it was also a site of public execution. At its heart stands the Fontaine Bartholdi, a dramatic sculpture of four horses rearing from the water to pull a chariot driven by an allegory of a great river. Designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, creator of the Statue of Liberty, it was originally intended for Bordeaux before being sold to Lyon and installed in 1892. In 1994 the artist Daniel Buren and architect Christian Drevet redesigned the square with sixty nine small fountains set flush into the granite paving.
