Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul

A soaring Gothic cathedral of dazzling white tuffeau stone, with vaults higher than Notre-Dame in Paris. Inside waits the exquisite Renaissance tomb of François the Second, last Duke of Brittany.

Sobre este lugar

Begun in 1434, the Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul took more than four centuries to finish, with its final touches added only at the end of the nineteenth century. Built from soft, luminous white tuffeau limestone, it feels startlingly bright inside, and its nave vaults rise to around thirty seven and a half metres, even higher than those of Notre-Dame in Paris. Its greatest treasure is the tomb of François the Second, the last independent Duke of Brittany, and his wife Marguerite de Foix, a dazzling early Renaissance masterpiece carved by Michel Colombe at the request of their daughter Anne of Brittany. The cathedral has twice suffered terrible fires, in 1972 and again in July 2020, when an arson attack destroyed the great organ, yet it remains one of the most moving monuments in the city.
