Musee du Louvre

A former royal fortress and palace that is now the largest and most visited art museum on earth. Its luminous glass pyramid glitters in the courtyard, while inside the Mona Lisa smiles at millions.

Sobre este lugar

The Louvre began around 1190 as a riverside fortress built by King Philippe Auguste, grew over the centuries into a sumptuous royal palace, and was finally thrown open to the public as a national museum in 1793 during the French Revolution. Today it holds some 380,000 objects and displays around 35,000 works across eight departments, from Egyptian antiquities to the Italian Renaissance, drawing close to ten million visitors every year. In 1989 the architect Ieoh Ming Pei crowned the main courtyard with a luminous glass pyramid, a bold modern gesture that now serves as the museum's iconic entrance. Somewhere within these endless galleries hangs Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, the most famous painting in the world.
