Sobre este lugar
Place Saint-Michel is one of the great meeting points of the Left Bank, set where the widened Pont Saint-Michel crosses from the island into the Latin Quarter. The square was carved out in the eighteen fifties during Baron Haussmann's sweeping rebuilding of Paris to serve as a grand bridgehead. Its showpiece is the Fontaine Saint-Michel, designed by the architect Gabriel Davioud and inaugurated in 1860, a towering wall of stone and bronze showing the Archangel Michael triumphant over a winged devil. For generations the fountain has been the natural rallying point for students of the nearby Sorbonne, a place to meet, to protest, and to begin a night out. In August 1944 it stood at the front line of the uprising that liberated Paris.
