Place Kléber

The largest square in the heart of Strasbourg, the city's great meeting point, centred on the statue of the Revolutionary general Jean-Baptiste Kléber.

Sobre este lugar

Place Kléber is the grand central square of Strasbourg and the beating heart of its commercial district, framed on every side by shops, cafes and stately facades. Known in the Middle Ages as the Barefoot Square after a Franciscan monastery and later as the Arms Square under French royal rule, it took its present name on the twenty fourth of June 1840. At its centre stands the bronze statue of Jean-Baptiste Kléber, a brilliant Revolutionary general born in the city in 1753 and assassinated in Cairo in 1800, whose ashes rest in a vault beneath the monument. Along the northern edge rises the Aubette, an elegant eighteenth-century building that hides a radical modernist interior of the 1920s, while in winter the square becomes the festive focus of Strasbourg's celebrated Christmas market, crowned by a towering fir tree.
