À propos de ce lieu
Set on the edge of the Oberer Schlossgarten, the Stuttgart State Opera is the grand centrepiece of the Staatstheater complex, which unites opera, ballet, and drama under one civic roof. Designed by the Munich architect Max Littmann and built between 1909 and 1912 for the Kingdom of Wurttemberg, its columned, temple-like facade and calm proportions make it a rare survivor: it is the only German opera house of the early twentieth century to remain almost entirely in its original form. Behind the pale stone walls sit two auditoriums, the large Grosses Haus and the intimate Kleines Haus, where the internationally celebrated Stuttgart Ballet was transformed into a global phenomenon under the choreographer John Cranko. Framed by chestnut trees and the still waters of the Eckensee, the building is as much a part of Stuttgart's green heart as it is of its cultural life.
