Stadtschloss (City Palace)

A dignified neoclassical palace on Schlossplatz that once housed the Dukes of Nassau and now serves as the seat of the Hessian state parliament.

À propos de ce lieu

Standing on the western edge of Schlossplatz, the Stadtschloss was built between 1837 and 1841 to designs by the Darmstadt architect Georg Moller for Duke Wilhelm of Nassau. Restrained and classical on the outside, it hides a lavish interior of gilded salons, painted ceilings and a glittering domed hall. The palace was the residence of the Nassau ducal family for only a few years before political events swept them from the throne. Since 1946, when Wiesbaden became the capital of the newly formed state of Hesse, the building has been the home of the Hessian Landtag, the regional parliament, its historic rooms now given over to the everyday business of democracy.
