À propos de ce lieu
The Cathedral of Santiago is the oldest and most important church in Bilbao and the spiritual heart of the Casco Viejo. Built mainly in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in the Gothic style, it is dedicated to Saint James, Santiago, the patron saint of Spain, for Bilbao lay on the northern coastal branch of the great pilgrimage route, the Camino de Santiago, that leads to his shrine in Galicia. Pilgrims once passed through the town and prayed here on their way west. The cathedral has a fine Gothic interior, a beautiful covered cloister with slender columns, and an ornate neo-Gothic main facade and spire added in the nineteenth century after a fire. Raised to cathedral status only in 1949, when the diocese of Bilbao was created, it remains a serene island of the Middle Ages amid the bustle of the old town.
