Plaza de San Antonio

Once the grand main square of Cádiz, lined with the elegant mansions of the merchant families who grew rich on the American trade, and overlooked by the church of San Antonio.

À propos de ce lieu

The Plaza de San Antonio was for a long time considered the main square of Cádiz, the city's most elegant and prestigious public space, especially during its eighteenth- and nineteenth-century golden age. It is a handsome, open square, overlooked at one end by the twin-towered facade of the church of San Antonio, and ringed by grand, often brightly painted mansions. These were the palatial homes of the wealthy merchant families, many of them of foreign origin, Italian, Irish, French, who flocked to Cádiz to grow rich on the trade with the Americas and made the city one of the most cosmopolitan in Europe. Their elegant houses, with their characteristic watchtowers and glazed galleries, or miradores, designed to catch the sea breezes and the light, give the old town its distinctive character. The square remains a dignified and pleasant space at the heart of the old city.
