The grand, palm-lined square where the old town meets the port, dominated by the elegant neoclassical town hall, long the main gateway into Cádiz for travellers arriving by sea.

À propos de ce lieu

The Plaza de San Juan de Dios is one of the main squares of Cádiz, lying right at the edge of the old town where it meets the busy port, so that for centuries it has been the first place travellers arriving by ship set foot in the city. Long, open and lined with palm trees and cafes, it is dominated by the handsome neoclassical facade of the Ayuntamiento, the city hall, built in the early nineteenth century. The square has always been a place of bustle and commerce, close to the harbour from which Cádiz drew its wealth and importance. With the masts and funnels of the port on one side and the lanes of the old town on the other, it makes a natural and atmospheric starting point for exploring the city, a threshold between the sea that made Cádiz and the ancient town it created.
