El Call

One of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe, a magical labyrinth of narrow, steep, stone-stepped lanes, home to a great medieval Jewish community until the expulsion of 1492.

À propos de ce lieu

El Call is the old Jewish quarter of Girona, and it is considered one of the best-preserved medieval Jewish quarters, or juderías, in all of Europe. A magical, atmospheric labyrinth of extremely narrow, steep, winding lanes, many of them stepped and covered, threading between tall stone houses in the heart of the old town, it was home from around the ninth century to a thriving and important Jewish community. Medieval Girona was a renowned centre of Jewish learning and especially of the Kabbalah, the tradition of Jewish mysticism, producing scholars of international fame. The community flourished for centuries until the Jews of Spain were expelled in 1492, after which the quarter was sealed off and largely forgotten, which paradoxically helped preserve its medieval fabric so perfectly. Today it houses the Museum of Jewish History, and simply wandering its silent, shadowy, beautiful lanes is one of the most evocative experiences in Girona.
