Plaza de la Merced

A small, leafy, tranquil square in the upper old town, graced by the Romanesque church of San Andrés, a peaceful green spot on the walk out toward the Alcázar.

À propos de ce lieu

The Plaza de la Merced is a small and tranquil square in the upper reaches of the old town, a leafy, shaded green space that offers a peaceful pause on the way out toward the Alcázar. It is overlooked by yet another of Segovia's Romanesque churches, the Iglesia de San Andrés, with its characteristic stonework, and shaded by tall trees. The square lies in the oldest and most atmospheric part of the city, close to where the old Jewish quarter and the clerical quarter met, and near the former site of the old cathedral that was destroyed in the Comuneros revolt. Quiet and often overlooked by visitors hurrying to the castle, it is a lovely spot to rest a moment in the shade and gather oneself before the final, dramatic walk out along the ridge to the Alcázar, which now lies just ahead.
