À propos de ce lieu
The Iglesia de Santo Tomé is a modest church in the old quarter of Toledo, notable for its elegant Mudéjar bell tower, but it draws visitors from around the globe for one reason: it houses what many consider the single greatest painting by El Greco, The Burial of the Count of Orgaz. Painted in 1586 for this very church, where it still hangs in the chapel for which it was made, the enormous canvas depicts the miraculous burial of a pious medieval nobleman, at which Saint Stephen and Saint Augustine themselves are said to have descended from heaven to lay him in his tomb. The lower half shows the earthly scene, crowded with the portraits of Toledo's gentlemen of El Greco's own day; the upper half opens into a swirling, elongated vision of heaven. It is a masterpiece of composition, colour and spiritual intensity, and seeing it in its original setting is one of the great experiences of Spanish art.
