Palau de la Generalitat

A magnificent Gothic and Renaissance palace, begun in the fifteenth century, that has served as the seat of Valencia's self-government for more than five hundred years.

À propos de ce lieu

The Palau de la Generalitat is one of the finest civil buildings in Valencia and the historic, still-functioning seat of the regional government. Construction began in 1421 to house the Generalitat, the body that governed the medieval Kingdom of Valencia, and continued over the following centuries, blending Gothic foundations with Renaissance towers and lavishly decorated ceremonial halls. Its elegant courtyard, grand staircase and richly painted chambers, hung with portraits and coats of arms, speak of a region proud of its ancient tradition of self-rule. After centuries in which Valencia's institutions were suppressed, the palace once again became the seat of regional government with the return of democracy and autonomy to Spain. Overlooking the leafy Plaça de Manises, its handsome stone towers are a dignified landmark in the heart of the old city.
