Castle Garden (Burggarten)

The terraced pleasure grounds that wrap the castle island in orange trees, roses and lake views. Here a fairy-tale palace steps down to the water past an iron orangery and a grotto said to hide the castle ghost.

Su questo luogo

The Burggarten is the intimate garden belt hugging Schwerin Castle on its island, a green counterpoint to the far larger Schlossgarten across the causeway. Laid out in 1857 during Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II's great reconstruction of the palace, it was designed to plans by Peter Joseph Lenné, the celebrated garden director of Sanssouci, and realised on the ground by court gardener Theodor Klett. The result is a compressed masterpiece of nineteenth-century landscape art, blending the soft curves of an English landscape garden with formal Italianate terraces, rose beds and gravel promenades that descend toward Lake Schwerin. Its two signature structures are the Orangery, a delicate hall of cast iron and glass fused directly onto the castle wall, and a small artificial grotto of granite boulders wrapped in local legend. Since 2024 the whole scene has carried UNESCO World Heritage status as part of the Residence Ensemble Schwerin.
