Schwerin Cathedral (Schweriner Dom)

Soaring above the old town in dark red brick, Schwerin Cathedral is the tallest church in Mecklenburg and one of the finest works of North German Brick Gothic. Its 117.5 metre tower has watched over the city for centuries.

Su questo luogo

The Cathedral of St Mary and St John the Evangelist is the spiritual and architectural anchor of Schwerin's old town. Founded by Henry the Lion in 1171 and consecrated in 1248, it was rebuilt from around 1270 as a vast three aisled Brick Gothic basilica to house the celebrated relic of the Holy Blood, which drew streams of medieval pilgrims. Stretching 105 metres in length with vaults rising 26.5 metres, it counts among the grandest brick churches in northern Europe. Inside are treasures spanning six centuries: a bronze baptismal font of 1325, a triumphal cross from around 1420, a Late Gothic winged altarpiece, and the tombs of the dukes and grand dukes of Mecklenburg. Since 2024 the cathedral has formed part of the UNESCO listed Schwerin Residence Ensemble, recognising its role at the heart of a grand ducal capital.
