Hessisches Staatstheater

A gleaming Neo-Baroque opera house commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II, its columned facade rising beside the Kurhaus like a jewel box for imperial Wiesbaden.

Su questo luogo

Standing at the eastern edge of the Bowling Green, the Hessisches Staatstheater embodies the confidence of Wiesbaden at its Belle Epoque peak. It was built between 1892 and 1894 on the personal orders of Kaiser Wilhelm II, a devoted regular of the spa town who found the old theatre unworthy of his favourite resort and helped fund the replacement, partly from the casino's profits. The design came from the Viennese firm of Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, the most sought-after theatre architects of the age, who dressed the house in late-historicist Renaissance and Baroque forms. In 1902 the architect Felix Genzmer added the mirrored foyer, an opulent rococo confection crowned by a ceiling painting from Kaspar Kogler. Today the theatre runs opera, drama, ballet, musicals and concerts across four stages, and each May it hosts the Internationale Maifestspiele, a festival born in 1896 under imperial patronage.
