The Playa del Postiguet is the main city beach of Alicante, a lovely crescent of soft golden sand curving along the seafront right at the foot of the old town and the castle hill. Lined with a palm-fringed promenade, cafes and bars, it offers the rare and delightful luxury of a proper sandy beach within a few minutes' walk of the historic centre, so that visitors can combine sightseeing with a swim in the warm, calm Mediterranean. Backed by the dramatic rocky bulk of Monte Benacantil, crowned by the castle of Santa Bárbara, it is a popular and sociable spot in summer. The beach is also significant for our walk because near its northern end lies the entrance to the lift, carved up through the heart of the rock, that carries visitors swiftly to the castle at the summit, our final destination.
