Mercado de la Ribera

A monumental Art Deco market hall on the bank of the river, long celebrated as one of the largest covered food markets in Europe and still the pantry of the old town.

Su questo luogo

Stretched along the bank of the river Nervión at the edge of the old town, the Mercado de la Ribera is one of Bilbao's landmark buildings and a cathedral to Basque food. A market has stood on this riverside spot for centuries, but the present grand hall, with its stepped Art Deco lines, stained glass and ship-like form, was built in 1929. Once recognised as the largest covered food market in Europe by sheer area and number of stalls, it remains a working market where Bilbaínos buy the superb produce of the region: fish and seafood landed on the Basque coast, beef from the green hills, vegetables, cheeses and the ingredients for the celebrated local cuisine. Beautifully restored, it now combines its traditional stalls with gastro-bars where visitors can taste the Basque love of good eating.
