Museo Guggenheim Bilbao

Frank Gehry's world-changing museum of titanium, glass and stone, a sculptural masterpiece that single-handedly transformed Bilbao's fortunes and gave the world the term the Bilbao Effect.

Su questo luogo

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, opened in 1997, is one of the most important and influential buildings of the twentieth century. Designed by the Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, it is a breathtaking sculptural form of swirling, billowing curves clad in shimmering titanium panels, limestone and glass, rising beside the river on the site of former docks and factories. Inside it houses modern and contemporary art, but the building itself is the main attraction. Its impact on Bilbao was so dramatic, drawing millions of visitors and sparking the regeneration of the whole city, that economists and planners coined a new term for it: the Bilbao Effect, the power of a single bold piece of architecture to transform a city's fortunes. Around the museum stand celebrated works of public art, including Jeff Koons's floral Puppy and giant Tulips, and Louise Bourgeois's towering bronze spider, Maman.
