The Pont de les Peixateries Velles, the Bridge of the Old Fish Shops, is one of the most photographed spots in Girona, a slender iron footbridge painted a deep red, crossing the river Onyar in the heart of the old town. Its fame rests on its maker: it was built in 1877 by the engineering company of Gustave Eiffel, the celebrated French engineer who, a decade later, would create the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Girona's little bridge thus shares a pedigree with one of the most famous structures in the world, and it is sometimes called the Eiffel Bridge. Beyond its heritage, the bridge is beloved for the view it gives: crossing it, or pausing in its iron latticework, you get a wonderful, close-up perspective on the Cases de l'Onyar, the painted houses rising from the water on either side, framed by the red ironwork of the bridge itself.
