The Iglesia de Santiago, the Church of Saint James, is the oldest church in Málaga, founded in 1490, only three years after the Catholic Monarchs took the city. Like several early churches of the reconquest, it was built in the Mudéjar style by Muslim craftsmen working under Christian rule, and its most striking feature is its tall, square brick bell tower, decorated with the geometric patterns and glazed ceramic typical of that art, and originally perhaps a minaret. The church is forever linked to the city's most famous son, for it was here, at the font, that the newborn Pablo Ruiz Picasso was baptised in November 1881. His baptismal record survives among the church's registers. A short walk from both his birthplace and the museum devoted to him, the church is a key stop on any Picasso pilgrimage through Málaga.
