The Museo Picasso Málaga opened in 2003, finally fulfilling Pablo Picasso's own wish that his work be represented in the city of his birth. It is housed in the Palacio de Buenavista, a graceful sixteenth-century palace blending Renaissance and Mudéjar elements, around a cool courtyard in the heart of the old town. The collection, built largely on works donated and loaned by members of the Picasso family, includes more than two hundred paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics and prints, spanning the whole of the artist's astonishingly long and varied career, from his early academic studies through Cubism to his late, playful reinventions. During the building's renovation, Phoenician, Roman and Moorish remains were discovered beneath it and are displayed in the basement, so a visit takes in both the city's deep past and its most celebrated modern genius.
