Banys Àrabs

A rare and atmospheric survival of Moorish Palma, a small domed Arab bathhouse from around the tenth to twelfth century, set in a quiet garden, among the few remnants of the Muslim city.

Su questo luogo

The Banys Àrabs, the Arab Baths, tucked into a tranquil private garden in the old town, are one of the very few surviving monuments of Moorish Palma, when the city was the capital of the Muslim island and known as Madina Mayurqa. Dating from around the tenth to twelfth century, the baths are a small but evocative hammam. The best-preserved chamber is the domed warm room, or tepidarium, its cupola pierced with small skylights that once let in shafts of light and steam, supported by a circle of a dozen columns topped with varied capitals, several of them reused from earlier Roman and Byzantine buildings. Little else survives of the great Moorish city that was swept away after the Christian conquest, which makes these quiet, shaded baths, set among orange and palm trees, a precious and atmospheric link to Palma's Islamic past.
