Basílica de Santa María del Coro
The grandest church of the old town, a Baroque basilica at the foot of Monte Urgull, with an exuberant carved portal crowned by Saint Sebastian and an interior aligned with the modern cathedral across the city.
Su questo luogo
The Basílica de Santa María del Coro is the most important church in the old town of San Sebastián, built in the mid-eighteenth century in an exuberant Baroque style, nestled against the base of Monte Urgull. Its most spectacular feature is its main portal, a dramatic, deeply carved churrigueresque doorway, a riot of twisting columns and sculpture, crowned by a figure of Saint Sebastian, the city's patron, pierced by arrows. The dim, atmospheric interior shelters fine altarpieces and a sculpture of the Virgin of the Choir, after whom it is named. There is a lovely urban secret here too: the church is deliberately positioned so that, looking out from its doorway straight down the street, the eye travels all the way across the city to the spire of the much later Buen Pastor Cathedral, the two churches of San Sebastián linked across the rooftops in a single sightline.
