San Martiño Pinario
An enormous Benedictine monastery beside the cathedral, one of the largest in Spain, with a severe Baroque facade hiding spectacular gilded altarpieces and grand cloisters, now a seminary and museum.
Su questo luogo
The Monastery of San Martiño Pinario is the second-largest monastery in Spain, an immense Benedictine complex rising immediately to the north of the cathedral. Founded in the early Middle Ages and rebuilt on a colossal scale from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, its monumental Baroque facade dominates the Praza da Inmaculada. Behind that severe granite front lie spectacular riches: a church containing one of the most magnificent gilded Baroque altarpieces in Galicia, a dazzling explosion of carved and gilded wood, along with a superb carved choir, grand staircases and two vast cloisters. For centuries home to a powerful community of Benedictine monks, the monastery today serves as a seminary for the training of priests and houses a museum, so that visitors can explore its churches, cloisters and treasures and marvel at the sheer scale and splendour of monastic Santiago.
