Iglesia de San Martín

A beautiful twelfth-century Romanesque church with a graceful covered portico and a Mudéjar tower, standing on a handsome square with a statue of the local rebel hero Juan Bravo.

Su questo luogo

The Iglesia de San Martín is one of the finest of Segovia's many Romanesque churches, dating from the twelfth century. Its most distinctive feature is the covered portico, or atrium, that wraps around the church, a gallery of elegant carved arches on slender columns, where parishioners and guilds once gathered. The church also has a fine Mudéjar bell tower, showing the influence of Moorish craftsmanship. It stands on a charming stepped square, the Plaza de Medina del Campo, often called the Plaza de San Martín, which is ringed by noble houses and towers and centred on a statue of Juan Bravo, a local hero who led the Castilian towns in the Comuneros revolt against the emperor Charles the Fifth in the sixteenth century. With its arcaded church, its old mansions and its heroic statue, the square is one of the most atmospheric corners of the old town.
