The Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo is the religious heart of Spain and one of the supreme achievements of Gothic architecture. As the seat of the Primate of Spain, the country's most senior archbishop, it has long been the most important cathedral in the land. It was built between 1226 and 1493 on the site of the main mosque of Moorish Toledo, which in turn stood over a Visigothic church. The result is a vast and soaring Gothic interior of five naves, with magnificent stained glass, an enormous carved and gilded high altarpiece, superbly carved choir stalls, and a treasury of jaw-dropping riches, including a towering silver monstrance carried through the streets at Corpus Christi. Among its many wonders is the Transparente, an astonishing Baroque confection of marble, bronze and painted figures lit by a hidden skylight cut through the vault. The cathedral also holds major paintings, including works by El Greco and other masters.
