Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes

A magnificent monastery in the ornate Isabelline Gothic style, built by Ferdinand and Isabella to celebrate a great victory, with a stunning two-storey cloister and the chains of freed Christian captives hung on its walls.

Su questo luogo

The Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes is the grandest monument of the Catholic Monarchs in Toledo, a Franciscan monastery begun in 1477 on the orders of Ferdinand and Isabella to commemorate their victory at the Battle of Toro, which secured Isabella's throne. Built in the lavishly ornate late-Gothic style named after the queen, the Isabelline, it was originally intended to serve as the royal mausoleum, before the conquest of Granada in 1492 led the monarchs to choose that city for their tomb instead. Its glory is a breathtaking two-storey cloister, its arches and galleries dripping with intricate carved stone tracery, pinnacles, figures and heraldry. On the outer walls hang rows of iron chains, said to be the shackles of Christian prisoners freed from Moorish captivity in the south, hung here in thanksgiving. Standing near the western edge of the city, it offers a fitting, triumphant end to a walk through Toledo.
