La Lonja

Zaragoza's finest Renaissance building, a sixteenth-century merchant exchange whose plain brick exterior hides a magnificent hall of soaring, decorated columns, now used for art exhibitions.

Su questo luogo

La Lonja is the most important example of Renaissance civil architecture in Zaragoza, built between 1541 and 1551 as the city's mercantile exchange, where merchants met to trade and strike deals. From the outside it is a dignified rectangular block of brick in the Aragonese style, with a gallery of small arches running beneath the eaves. But step inside and the effect is spectacular: a single great hall divided by rows of tall, slender columns that rise and branch into an intricate vaulted ceiling, decorated with Renaissance medallions and the coats of arms of the city. For centuries the beating heart of Zaragoza's commerce, the building today belongs to the city and serves as a prestigious exhibition hall, so visitors can usually step inside to admire the glorious interior and whatever art is on show.
