Grosse Cloche

A mighty medieval gate crowned with a great bell, spanning the old Rue Saint-James. Its twin towers are so beloved that they appear on the city's coat of arms.

Su questo luogo

The Grosse Cloche, or Great Bell, is one of Bordeaux's most cherished monuments and a symbol of the city, appearing on its coat of arms. This Gothic gateway rises some forty metres over the old Rue Saint-James, its two massive round towers framing a central belfry. It stands on the foundations of a twelfth century Gallo Roman gate and once formed the Porte Saint-Éloi, a main entrance into the walled town, later serving as belfry of the old town hall and even as a prison. High in the tower hangs the great bell Armande-Louise, cast in 1775 and weighing around seven thousand seven hundred and fifty kilograms, so heavy it took fourteen pairs of oxen to raise. Set into the stone below is an astronomical clock designed in 1759 by Paul Larroque, while a golden lion crowns the smaller tower, recalling the centuries of English rule.
