Marché Couvert

A grand red brick and cast iron market hall built in 1865 directly over an arm of the river Lauch. Around twenty merchants still sell Alsatian cheese, wine, produce and fresh fish beneath its airy roof.

Su questo luogo

The Marche Couvert is Colmar's covered market, designed in 1865 by the architect Louis Michel Boltz, who also built the town's municipal theatre. Its warm brick and sandstone shell hangs on a modern cast iron frame, a proud piece of nineteenth century engineering dressed up with decorative arches. The hall was deliberately built over the Lauch so that market gardeners could deliver produce by flat bottomed boat straight through a water gate, and fresh fish arrived the same way. After years of other uses the building was restored to its original purpose in 2010, and today around twenty traders fill it with the smells and colours of Alsace, from Munster cheese and kugelhopf to Riesling and the day's catch.
