The Palais des Ducs et des Etats de Bourgogne grew around the medieval palace where the dukes of Burgundy held one of the wealthiest courts in Europe, beginning with Philip the Bold in 1364 and ending when Charles the Bold fell in 1477 and the duchy passed to the French crown. The watchtower known as the Tour Philippe le Bon, finished around 1455, still dominates the skyline, and a spiral staircase of 316 steps climbs to a sweeping viewpoint 46 metres up. Most of the graceful facades framing the courtyard were added in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to designs by Jules Hardouin Mansart, and today the complex houses both the city hall and the Musee des Beaux-Arts.
