Eglise Saint-Nizier

A Flamboyant Gothic church at the core of the Presqu'ile, recognisable by its two unequal spires and a classical Renaissance doorway, standing on one of the most ancient Christian sites in Lyon.

Su questo luogo

The Eglise Saint-Nizier is built on ground sacred since the earliest days of Christianity in Lyon. Tradition holds that a fifth century bishop raised a basilica here over Roman ruins to hold the relics of the martyrs of Lyon, killed in 177, among them the young slave woman Saint Blandine. The church later took the name of Nicetius, a revered sixth century bishop known in French as Saint Nizier. The present building is Flamboyant Gothic, begun in the fourteenth century and only completed in the nineteenth, which explains its two mismatched spires: the northern tower was finished in 1481 in medieval stone, while its slender neighbour is a neo-Gothic addition of the eighteen hundreds. The central doorway breaks the Gothic mood entirely, a refined classical portal designed during the Renaissance by the great architect Philibert Delorme. The church forms part of the Lyon historic site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
