Fort Saint-Jean

The fortress guarding the harbour mouth, wrapping a medieval royal tower and a lighthouse inside 17th century ramparts whose guns once pointed inward at the city.

Su questo luogo

Fort Saint-Jean stands on its rocky promontory exactly where the Vieux-Port opens to the sea. Its name recalls the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, who kept a commandery here as far back as the twelfth century. The fort grew around two older structures, the fifteenth century Tour du Roi René and the Tour du Fanal lighthouse of 1644. The ramparts that bind them together were ordered by Louis the Fourteenth after the rebellious city defied him in 1660, and their most powerful guns were aimed inward at Marseille itself. Today the old stronghold has been reborn as part of the MuCEM, its gardens and ramparts open to all.
