The Promenade du Paillon, known to locals as the Coulee Verte or green flow, is a 1.2 kilometer ribbon of parkland running from Place Massena toward the old town. It was built directly on top of the Paillon, a wild mountain torrent that engineers began vaulting over in 1867 so the growing city could expand across it. For decades the site was an unlovely bus station and car park, until the city reinvented it in 2013 as a garden of around twelve hectares, planting some sixteen hundred trees along with thousands of Mediterranean shrubs and flowers. Today it is where Nice comes to play, with shaded lawns, misting arches, and water jets that delight children on hot afternoons.
