The Art-Fair Sleight of Hand - Grand Palais

On 2 April 2017, as the Art Paris art fair was being dismantled inside the Grand Palais, two thieves used a classic distraction scam, with one claiming a jewellery saleswoman had dropped money while the other snatched her bag, making off with around 200,000 euros in jewels.

Su questo luogo

The Grand Palais is one of the architectural marvels of Paris, a vast hall of stone, steel and glass built for the World's Fair of 1900, with a soaring glazed nave that floods the interior with light. For more than a century it has hosted the city's grandest exhibitions and art fairs. On the night of 2 April 2017, as the four-day Art Paris fair was being packed away, it also hosted a quiet, almost old-fashioned crime. Two thieves approached a jewellery saleswoman amid the bustle of the dismantling. One distracted her by insisting she had dropped money on the floor, and while her attention was turned, his accomplice simply lifted a bag holding roughly 200,000 euros in jewels and walked away. No weapons, no broken glass, just a con trick as old as the city, pulled off under one of its most spectacular roofs.
