The Fake-Police Robbery - La Madeleine
On the night of 2 to 3 October 2016, at a private residence just off the Madeleine on rue Tronchet, men posing as police bound a world-famous celebrity and stole about 10 million dollars in jewellery; the press called them the grandpa robbers, and in May 2025 eight defendants, including the convicted ringleader Aomar Ait Khedache, were found guilty.
Su questo luogo
The church of the Madeleine looks less like a church than a Greek temple, a vast colonnade begun as a monument to Napoleon's army. Behind it, rue Tronchet runs north into a quarter of discreet luxury hotels and private mansions. It was in one of those residences, a short way up the street, that one of the most talked-about robberies of the decade took place during Paris Fashion Week in October 2016. A group of men wearing police-style clothing talked their way inside, bound and gagged a world-famous celebrity, and made off with around 10 million dollars in jewellery, including a single enormous ring. Several of the gang were elderly, which earned them the nickname the grandpa robbers. The case took nearly nine years to reach a verdict, but in May 2025 a Paris court convicted eight defendants, among them the ringleader Aomar Ait Khedache.
